Summer has arrived as if someone opened the doors to a blast furnace! It was 95 degrees in St Paul yesterday. The temps are going to be in the 80's for the next seven days.
While some folks love the hot days, I am totally miserable. The humidity is high and the sun is scorching, so I have the windows closed, the drapes all drawn and the fans blowing in every room. It's not even noon and I'm sweating.
We have air conditioners in several rooms, but to conserve energy, we don't turn them on until the heat build-up becomes intolerable. At this rate, it won't be long until we reach that point.
Days like this make me long for the lovely days of winter when you can regulate your bodily comfort by merely adding or subtracting clothing. When it's this hot, however, you can't minimize clothing past naked to cool off, yet you have to go on trying to live your daily life.
So, I will suffer another "beastly hot" summer (as my mother used to say). I will feel "blah" and lethargic and most likely, crabby.
I think I'm pretty crabby today, in fact!

I totally know how you feel...I worked in the garden yesterday and was sweltering. Today, however, is lovely...a nice breeze off the lake and I'm getting all sorts of stuff done in the gardens. I hope it's cooler in St. Paul, too. Get a book and a glass of ice tea or lemonade and just try to relax.
I am not a fan of the midwest heat either. Irv and I finally gave in a few years back and got central air. Best move we ever made. It's hard to work in AC all day at the office and come home to a blistering hot house...plus sleeping was impossible. We don't put the AC on unless it's too hot to have the windows and doors open....I hate the cost, but i wouldn't give it back. :)
With the humidity you have, pouring ice water on yourself just won't work like it does out here. Humidity is just awful. Makes it so difficult to cool off. I know the cost is high, put maybe keep one room cool with the window AC and go in and out of there to stay at a reasonable body temp?
Thought of you when I saw the weather report. Isn't normal weather when we've got coolish days in Virginia. Can you open opposite windows a bit and get a draught going? Fans just circulate hot air.
If you're sitting around being miserable, it's time to turn on the AC. As Holly said, even just in one room.... I also like to wet my head, or my whole body, in cool water. The grands have been running through the sprinkler at home...really reminds me of my own childhood!
I feel ya on the miserableness! The past few days have been awful up here as well...
Unfortunately, we just moved to a second floor duplex with no a/c. Blech! We're hopefully getting a/c this weekend and have decided to only cool our living room and our bedroom on really awful days. They're right next to each other so we'll just block off the rest of the house.
I wish you good luck with your staying cool! :)
I hate to be hot!! Cold too! But hot makes me feel so much worse!! My husband keeps our house really cool so when I visit someone that doesn't it is really hard!
yes summer is burning here in many places in India as well, though Bangalore is ok ok and cool at nights.....thanks for your comments and yes i do take pride for all the goodies in my country and at the same time condemn those various 'badies' as well. (Though i prefer to share only the goodies through my blog) maybe the new generation will change and the badies will turn to goodies in few years from now :)
Hot (and humid) summers are the worst. I grew up in Ohio and dreaded it too!
Pour yourself an ice cold lemonade or ice tea and enjoy.

Summer sounds a bit sweltering. Perhaps we should be glad of the rain. Pity we can't do an exchange !
Get a couple of tubs of water to plop down in yourself and hubby and squirt each other.
Unlike me, you're very conscientious about posting, Ms Sparrow. Since I haven't seen you on the screen lately, I'm hoping the heat hasn't gotten the best of you.
