Lily the Bear

Several weeks ago, I posted about Lily's den-watch up in northern Minnesota near Ely (pronounced E-lee). Lily was in labor and gave birth to a single cub. My daughter, her daughter and I were all following the events as they were shown on a video camera that was set up inside the bear's den. Lily soon had thousands of followers online.

The North American Bear Center sold a few Lily the Bear items on their website. Last week I got a package in the mail from my granddaughter. Inside was a very nice tan Lily T-Shirt for me.
When I told my daughter about it, she said she had ordered the very same shirt for me! We had a laugh over how we all think alike! (Only, I never ordered it for myself because I don't buy new things.)

They've had a contest to name the baby bear (a female) sponsored by a large grocery store chain. They received thousands of entries, the winner to get $500. It will be interesting to see what kind name they choose--will it be a Native American name, a cutesy name, an historical name or area name? We'll soon know. I didn't enter, but I would name the little black bear "Teddy". What name would you choose?

I submitted 2 names. I am a Lily watcher. I log on to the Den Cam at least 4-5 times a day. I have been lucky several times to view the little cub. I also keep up with the updates from the NABC.
One disturbing fact was learned this week. If a black bear is tagged and wearing a radio tracking collar , brightly colored and marked) it is NOT unlawful to shoot the bear. That is outrageous !

Congratulations on the new addition. It's always nice when Mother Nature is more popular than reality tv. A lot of people refer to Minneopolis as Minnie, so perhaps that would work as a name. Don't know. Not from the area, but hope you let us know.

I vote for Stella. Stella, the bear. Just 'cause I like it.

I wonder whether a Dakota or Lakota word for Lily or flower would work. Or Fleur, which is French for flower and was the name of a strong Native American woman in some of Louise Erdrich's novels.

I've been watching lily bear as well, not a lot seems to happen when I watch her, they just seem to be asleep all the time. It must be the time of day that I have been watching, maybe it's nap time for them then.
I wouldn't know what to call the baby bear, I struggled to name my own children and the last child ended up with an Irish name as the other two had a Scottish and a Welsh name, all of which had come about by accident. I'm not nearly as bad a mother as that sounds, it's just there are so many wonderful names to choose from.

I'm with you on the not spending money on myself, I have everything I need and more, so why buy more.
Much love
Lia
