Yesterday, my daughter Brenda had a day off. She's a nurse at the Veteran's Administration Hospital. She wanted to see a movie that was showing only at an "Art House" theater over in Minneapolis. It was her idea. I'm a St. Paul person--I don't do Minneapolis any more than absolutely necessary.
St. Paul and Minneapolis are separated by the Mississippi River but are very distinct cities. St Paul is the State Capitol so there are a lot of government buildings here as well as the History Museum, Science Museum and the State Fairgrounds. Minneapolis is bigger and livelier, and that's where the independent (or "small") films open.
All I knew about "Bernie" was that it's about a murder in a small Texas town. As it turns out, the film is a dark comedy based on real events. And, it is very funny--the funniest movie I've seen in a long time.

That sounds even more serious than the east and west side of Cleveland, with the Cuyahoga River. Hooray for the movie.
More fun than watching your daughter snort perfume?!

Thanks. I think this would be great and I can really use a funny movie these days.
Would you believe I know where Carthage Texas is....the movie takes place in this town. I didn't check to see if it was actually filmed there.
Sounds like a promising plot and a good cast - one to catch on DVD for me, when it drifts across the Atlantic!
Joanne: Isn't the Cuyahoga River the one that actually caught fire once?
Thank heaven the Mississippi hasn't done that!
Jane & Chris: There are very few things that will ever make me laugh as hard as that!
Buttercup: I'm sure "Bernie" must be showing in NYC. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Meggie: I'd be curious to know about Carthage and how the people there like the movie.
Owl: I hope you get to see the film soon. It's a "hoot"! (Sorry, I couldn't resist the pun!)
I can't even remember the last time I saw a movie, this one sounds great though.
it's always good to see a really funny movie....
And what a cast! Thanks for this. I hadn't heard of it and it hasn't gotten to Spain yet. I'll watch for it!
Minneapolis is, by far, the more entertaining of the two cities.
:-)
Greetings from Mpls,

Jack Black got rave reviews for this movie. I haven't seen it yet but it looks fun. Glad you enjoyed it.

Linda: A hard-working gal like you should get out a see a good movie!
Crafty: I hope you get a chance to see it. It's a whole other world.
Mitch: Oh, you are gonna love it. I'm a big fan of dark comedies. Last night I watched "Drowning Mona" (with Bette Midler) again.
Pearl: Well, that's true--but we have the corner on stodginess!
Joanna: Jack was really excellent in this film. The best thing he's ever done.
Oh, I had forgotten about "Drowning Mona." Now I want to see that again!
I've never really visit the Twin Cities, only landed there on Northwest to change planes, so I can't really say, one way or the other. However, my friend Judy, from there, and you seem to be on the same wave length. She's also said the same about Vermont and Minnesota. Anyway, bought a pair of moccasins in Vermont (in a small store with an ageless owner) that were made by the Minnetonka. (deerskin, no lining) Have them on now. And, wow, I've never ever worn slippers this comfortable, this soft, this perfect.
This sounds good.
The last movie I loved was 'The Help'!
